Should we Payoff house note or Refinance? Any other options that I haven’t considered?

15 May

I am Currently Unemployed

House note remaining $134,000 = $3,300 per month at 5.375% interest rate

$74,000 in an IRA – losing money fast!

$55,000 Emergency funds

Should we take the IRA and emergency funds to pay off remaining $134,000 on house which will free up the $3,300 per month (of course taxes and insurance will still have to be paid)

Principal and Interest per month is $1,900.

Taxes and Insurance on house approximately $18,000 per year

We have additional monies in 401K’s that will not be touched until retirement

•Should we pay off the house, which will leave us without emergency funds and one 401K?
•Should we invest these monies in an annuity which will pay 10% upon entering, but will be tied up for 10 years? Guarantees 8%
•Should we refinance the house to lower the monthly payment and when I get a job, pay off as quickly as possible (but if I don’t get a job, have a more manageable note)?

Husband is of retirement age, so no penalties, just the interest will have to be paid if we use the IRA.

My fear is that if I don’t get a job soon and we deplete our emergency funds that we will not be able to make ends meet for the remaining years on the house note.

What to do? Funds are disappearing fast!

What mutual funds are considered a good investment?

16 Apr

I keep hearing that one should invest in mutual funds that are a combination of around 60% stocks and 40% mutual funds. Can someone knowledgeable in mutual funds recommend a company (like Vangard for Fidelity) that sells mutual fund that invests with this arrangement (60/40)?
Thanks guys….this is great advice….all of it. I will heed your guidance. Wonder when the bottom is going to drop out of the stock market again?

What is considered a good personal injury settlement?

12 Mar

This was for injury from a car accident in Illinois. I was once told that a good settlement was 1.5x your medical bills. I’m looking for an “adaptable” estimate like the one above as the amount of injury can vary greatly and the medical bills are a good indication of that.

Is an insurance settlement considered taxable income?

24 Feb

Wife was in an auto accident. Our attorney negotiated a small settlement with the insurance company. IRS claims we owe tax on the settlement because our attorney reported the settlement amount as nonemplyoyee compensation paid to us. I thought insurance settlements were nontaxabel income. Need help or the proper publication in the tax code to cite when I respond to the IRS. Thanks

What is considered taxable income?

19 Feb

I may have some income resulting from (three different) lawsuits and/or pre-trial settlements for three unrelated things:

1. Bodily injury from a car accident
2. Civil Rights violation (improper actions by police)
3. Illegal termination due to violation of FMLA

What are the tax implications from each of these lawsuits? What suggestions can you provide to structure settlements so they result in the minimum amount of tax owed (if any at all)?
For #3 above, the employer offered a severance package which if accepted, would result in normal payroll taxes as if I had actually worked during that period. I want to specifically structure the settlement so the monetary award is for something other than those wages to avoid the payroll taxes.
