Where to live for early retirement?

30 May

Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap places for a Canadian to make an early retirement to? I’m considering China (Shanghai), Thailand, Argentina and Uruguay. Any suggestions on ways to estimate my living expenses in different countries or other cheap places to live (stretch a fixed income as far as possible)? Which country would you recommend retiring to and why?
I’d want to have high-speed internet, air conditioning and my own living space (exclusive use of a kitchen and bathroom) at a minimum.

Is there any way to avoid paying taxes on an early withdrawal from a variable annuity?

17 May

I panicked and withdrew my variable commercial annuity in september 2008 from a company that was reportedly going bankrupt. I withdrew the amount before the age of 59 1/2, now I realize I have a HUGE tax penalty. Is there any way to put it back in the annuity without a penalty?
It’s already been past 90 days…is there anyway to turn it over AFTER that without penalty?

How do I avoid the 10% penalty for early withdrawal from a variable annuity?

27 Apr

Seventeen years ago my dad set up a variable annuity from Nationwide Insurance for my newborn daughter to help with her college expenses. I was named the custodian (until she is 18), and also the beneficiary. I now want to take that money and use it for her college expenses, but it looks like from the contract that she will incur a 10% penalty for this withdrawal before age 59.5. Is there a way to avoid this penalty by using the funds for a college education?

What is the penatly for taking out early retirement?

21 Apr

Does anyone know exactly how much money the government takes from early withdrawl of your retirment funds, I’m in my 40’s. I need the cash but want to roll some over too. Let’s say I took out 35-60K, Is there any way to get around all the penalty’s, Most of this money I get will be for paying debts/creditors, so is there anyway to pay them with out being penalized? Is there a better way to take your retirement funds?
Great advise from all so far.
Retirement was funded from employer, no contributions on my part. It is actually going to be approx. 160K. But I only want to take 30-60K, sorry if that was mis-leading.
I don’t own a house, so that will not work. And have not found employment yet, so investing with another company won’t work either. I feel the only way to get out of debt and not rely on the government is to take my funds until I find work again. Your right my luck has ran out, at least for the time being, and don’t I know it!
